What Is the Douyin App?

Douyin is a short-form video platform launched by ByteDance in September 2016. Users create and watch vertical videos, discover content through an algorithmic “For You” feed, watch livestreams, and shop inside the app.

Key features include:

• Video recording and editing tools with effects, filters, and music
• Personalized content recommendations
• Livestreaming with virtual gifts
• In-app shopping and live commerce

It has grown into a super-app combining entertainment, social interaction, and e-commerce, operating mainly in mainland China under local regulations.

Douyin vs TikTok: Are They the Same?

No. Although both are owned by ByteDance and share a similar interface and short-video concept, Douyin and TikTok are completely separate platforms.

TikTok is a Chinese-owned app (via ByteDance), but there is no TikTok available inside mainland China — only Douyin. Content, followers, and virtual currency do not transfer between the two apps.

How to Download Douyin

Douyin is not available in most international App Stores or Google Play listings. For a full step-by-step walkthrough, see our dedicated guide: Complete Guide: How to Download Official Chinese Douyin (TikTok China Version) 2026.

iOS (iPhone/iPad)

The most reliable method is creating or switching to a China Mainland Apple ID, changing the App Store region to China Mainland, searching for “抖音” or “Douyin,” and downloading the official app. You can usually switch back to your original region afterward without removing the app.

Android

Visit the official Douyin download page (douyin.com), download the APK, enable installation from unknown sources for your browser, and install it. Avoid random third-party APK sites.Always download from official sources only to stay safe.

How to Make a Douyin Account

You can browse some public content without an account, but creating one unlocks following, commenting, liking, livestream interaction, and recharging.

Common methods include:

• Chinese (+86) phone number (most stable)
• International phone numbers (supported in many cases, though success varies)
• WeChat, QQ, or other linked logins

For complete instructions on registration, login, recovery, and deletion, check our detailed Douyin Account Guide. Note that full interactive features and reliable recharging often work best after proper verification.

How to Use Douyin

Once installed and logged in, the interface feels familiar if you have used TikTok:

• For You feed — Endless personalized short videos. Swipe up for the next one.
• Search — Find creators, products, trends, or topics.
• Create — Record or upload videos with built-in editing tools, effects, and music.
• Livestreams — Watch hosts in real time, chat, and send virtual gifts.
• Profile & Wallet — Manage your content, followers, and virtual currency balance.
• Shopping — Browse and buy products directly from videos or live streams.

One of the most engaging parts of Douyin is the livestream culture. Viewers support creators by sending virtual gifts, which appear as animations on screen and contribute to the host’s earnings.

Douyin Currency System: Diamonds Explained

Douyin’s premium virtual currency is called Diamonds (钻石). It was previously known as Doubi or 抖币; the two names refer to the same currency. Official conversion is generally 1 CNY ≈ 10 Diamonds on standard channels (rates can differ on iOS due to platform fees).

What Diamonds are used for:

• Buying and sending virtual gifts during livestreams
• Supporting favorite creators
• Joining fan clubs or participating in interactive events
• Certain promotions or other in-app features

When you send a gift, Diamonds leave your wallet and the creator receives a corresponding revenue unit (often called 音浪 / Sound Waves), of which the platform takes a share.Diamonds cannot be transferred between users or withdrawn as cash by regular viewers. They are only usable inside Douyin (not on international TikTok).

Is Douyin free?

Yes. Downloading and using the basic features (watching videos, creating content, browsing) is free. Optional paid elements include Diamonds for gifts and certain promotions.

Is Douyin safe?

The official Douyin app from ByteDance is legitimate. Safety depends mainly on how you download it:

• Use only the official website or China Mainland App Store.
• Avoid unofficial or modified APKs.
• Be cautious with permissions and third-party login methods.
• As with any social app, review privacy settings and avoid sharing sensitive personal information.

For international users, the main practical challenges are access (geo-restrictions) and payment methods for recharging.

How to Recharge Douyin Diamonds

Recharging is essential if you want to send gifts or fully participate in livestreams.

Official method

Open Douyin → Me (我) → Wallet → Diamonds / Recharge, then pay with supported Chinese methods such as Alipay, WeChat Pay, or Chinese bank cards. This works smoothly for users with those payment options but is often restricted or inconvenient for people outside China.

Third-party method (recommended for overseas users)

Platforms like TOPUPlive allow you to buy Douyin Diamonds with international payment methods (cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and many local options). You only need your Douyin User ID — no password is required. Delivery is usually very fast (often within minutes).

How to recharge on TOPUPlive:

1. Go to the Douyin top-up page on TOPUPlive.
2. Select your preferred Diamond package.
3. Enter your Douyin User ID (found on your profile page under “Me”).
4. Choose your payment method and complete the order.
5. Diamonds are credited to your account after confirmation.
